Tell us about yourself, hobbies, interests, family, job, etc.
I am one of the few gym members that is receiving Medicare! I met my husband Dale in high school and we have been married almost 46 years. We have three adult children Kelly, Holly and Nick and 6 wonderful grandchildren. After my children were in elementary school I went back to school myself and became a Legal Assistant which I did for 26 years, retiring in 2016. I enjoy going to Michigan football games (our family has had season ticket for 45 years), going to Tigers games, basically I love all sports! I love to be active whether it be walking my 10,000 steps per day or riding my bike. On a hot summer’s day you will find us out on Lake Erie in our 19 foot Lyman which my husband restored.
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started doing Crossfit in 2016. Those of you who know me know that Cristina Phillips is my daughter in law. She and Nick were instrumental in getting me to try Crossfit.
What do you remember about your first CrossFit experience?
I was terrified to say the least. I thought everyone would be wondering what this older woman was doing there. Would I be able to do what everyone else was doing?? Would my form be correct? Bill was very patient with me and scaled my movements appropriately.
What do you most enjoy about CrossFit?
I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment you have at the end of each WOD
What do you most enjoy about being part of Light the Fire CrossFit family?
The camaraderie at the gym is great. From the coaches to the other members you always feel that someone cares about you. I can’t tell you how many times members have come up to me after a class and told me “good job.” That always inspires me to come back and work hard.
What motivates you to come to the box?
For me the phrase “Use it or Lose It” motivates me. You find this truly has more meaning as you age. Even though I am not a morning person I manage to drag myself to class and then when I am done I am ready to do more when I get home.
What is you most recent PR/biggest accomplishment?
I participated in the CrossFit Open this year and was able to complete most the movements. I also participated in and completed the Murph in 2017 which was an accomplishment for me because I am not a runner.
What is your favorite wod, lift, movement, or skill?
I like to do arm work and especially like the wods that are aerobic in nature.
What is your least favorite wod, lift, movement, or skill?
My least favorite movements are wallballs and burpees!
What is your current CrossFit goal?
To stay the course and show improvement each week.
What would you tell a newbie or someone that has never done CrossFit?
You need to come in and try it for a couple of weeks and you will be hooked!
How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the box?
CrossFit has made me more aware of my overall health . It motivates me to make better food choices and to stay active.
